33. NICHOLAS IV5 FAIRLAMB (WILLIAM IST4, FREDERICK3, JOHN2, NICHOLAS1) was born 4 November 1817, and died 6 March 1884 in Polk County, Missouri. He married ANN ELIZA REATH 2 March 1847, daughter of AMOS REATH and RUTH RUSSELL.

Notes for NICHOLAS IV FAIRLAMB:

Nickolas Fairlamb was born in PA Nov 4, 1817 and died in Benton Twp,Polk Co,MO, Mar 28, 1884. Ann E. Fairlamb was also born in PA May 4, 1825 and died in Benton Twp,Polk Co,MO, Dec 26, 1893. Both are buried in Reynolds Chapel Cemetery, Dallas Co, MO. This cemetery is on the Dallas County side of the Polk County line. The Fairlambs moved to Polk Co, MO, in 1879.

I learned recently that Ann Elizabeth Faircloth's maiden name was Reath. She married Nicholas Fairlamb about 1846/7 in Columbia, Lancaster Co, PA. So, there does not appear to be a direct Broome-Tarbert connection as I earlier thought.

It is possible that an aunt raised my Maria Ellen Tarbert, and, as she became a teenager, she moved in with the Fairlambs to work. These events would have been in Columbia, Lancaster Co, PA. My father always said she was raised by an aunt, and I had erroneously assumed it was the Fairlambs. With further research, I noticed on the census listings that Nicholas and Ann Fairlamb usually had a young girl or two in their household -- probably to assist with the tailor occupation that Nicholas pursued.

Regards, Hollis

Notes for WILLIAM PATTERSON FAIRLAMB:
William Patterson Fairlamb was born in Logtown, Chester Heights, Pa. Logtown was a small town off of Baltimore Pike at Valleybrook Road. He is a descendent of Nicholas Fairlamb who came to America in 1700 from England. There is a Historical marker where the town was once located. He was a brother of my Grandfather, Joseph Henry Fairlamb. The family lived on a farm and also had a general store, operated by his mother Margaretta and his father Thomas Vernon Fairlamb. Vernon name came from Thomas' grandmother. There were horses on their farm which would seem the reason that William was in the Cavalry
William Patterson Fairlamb, middle name was his Grandmother's name.

Killed in Battle of Cold Harbor, Va. 1864.

Ms. Dougherty:

I well remember your visit to Cold Harbor last month and hope that you enjoyed
yourself. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what information I provided
you, however I will try and reconstruct some of what we talked about.

William P. Fairlamb was mustered into the 162nd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers
(a.k.a. 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry) on September 26, 1862. He was promoted to the
rank of corporal January 28, 1862 and then to sergeant on December 10, 1863. He
was killed in action near Old Church Tavern, Va. on May 30, 1864.

Old Church Tavern is a crossroads located approximately five miles northeast of
Old Cold Harbor (near the visitor center where we talked). On May 30, 1864 the
Union cavalry (including the 17th Penn. Cavalry) pushed southwest from Old
Church in an effort to open the roads to Old Cold Harbor. The 17th Penn. Cavalry
was part of Colonel Thomas C. Devins' Brigade of Brigadier General Alfred T.A.
Torbert's Division. Devins' report of the action on May 30 (a skirmish known as
Matadequin Creek) can be found in The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the
Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Volume 36, part 1, pages
837-838. Below is an excerpt from Devin's report:

May 30, I advanced to a position on right and rear of Lipscomb's [Old Church]
Tavern, where the brigade encamped. I was here ordered to communicate with
General Warren's left (who was advancing toward Shady Grove Church)and to picket
and hold Cold Harbor road. After a personal reconnaissance on the latter road, I
posted the reserve on the strong position at Matadequin Run, with pickets
advanced to the road forks three-fourths of a mile in front. My orders were, if
attacked, the reserve should hold the run in any event until support arrived.
FIGHT AT MATADEQUIN CREEK.
About one hour after being posted the advanced pickets were at,-tacked by a
battalion of cavalry and driven across the creek, at which point the enemy were
checked. I immediately ordered Major Durland with the other two squadrons (three
squadrons being detached on the Mechanicsville road) to support his pickets and
re-establish them. This was effected in a short time, the enemy retiring upon
being charged and the pickets were again advanced. About one hour after the
first attack it was again renewed in force. Ordering the Sixth and Ninth New
York to saddle up and follow, I proceeded to the front and found the three
squadrons of the Seventeenth briskly engaged with the enemy, who was endeavoring
to force a passage across the creek. I immediately dismounted and deployed the
Sixth New York on the right of the Seventeenth and the Ninth New York on the
left. There was but little time for reconnoitering the ground, which on both
flanks was heavily wooded, as the enemy was pressing both flanks of the
Seventeenth, but I judged it to average the same as that in my front, and
believing that the enemy's force was not superior to my own, I intended as soon
as his front was fully developed to turn his left with the Sixth New York and
endeavor to secure some prisoners and horses. At this time the general
commanding division came upon the ground and assumed command. The enemy began to
show a much heavier force, and successively the Reserve Brigade and part of the
First Brigade were sent in and became warmly engaged. The ammunition of the
Seventeenth Pennsylvania having become exhausted, they were temporarily
relieved, the Second Regulars taking up their position. The Sixth New York
forced a passage across the ravine and creek, and pressed the enemy's left
successfully. The Ninth New York, on the left, after crossing two very deep
ravines, found themselves on the north bank of the creek with an abrupt descent
and ascent of nearly 40 feet on each bank and the enemy strongly barricaded on
the edge of the woods facing the south bank, with a clearing of 15 rods in his
front. After losing some valuable men, Colonel Sackett was forced to abandon the
attempt to cross in the face of the enemy until the gallant charge of two
regiments of First Brigade in the center relieved him by flanking the left of
the rebel position, when he immediately crossed the creek and pressed the enemy
sharply, capturing a number of prisoners. At this time a general advance being
ordered and the enemy in full retreat, I advanced to the forks, and thence to
the intersection of Bottom's Bridge road with that to White House, at which
point the brigade encamped for the night. The day's operations summed up in loss
to the brigade of 1 commissioned officer killed and 3 wounded; 4 enlisted men
killed, 21 wounded, and 2 missing; total, 31.

There does exist a published history of the 17th Penn. Cavalry. Published in
1911, it may be difficult to locate but check with your local librarian and you
